17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17α,20β-DHP) is an endogenous, maturation-inducing steroid that stimulates oocyte maturation in females of several teleost species. For example, 1 µg/ml of 17α,20β-DHP applied to Persian sturgeon oocytes has been shown to effectively induce germinal vesicle breakdown, an essential step during oocyte maturation. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone and the gonadotropins, follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, have been shown to stimulate the production of 17α,20β-DHP either in vivo or in vitro. 17α,20β-DHP has also been reported to influence spermiation by stimulating milt production when administered at 5 mg/kg to various male teleosts.

17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one acts as the maturation-inducing hormone (MIH) in salmonid fish and rainbow trout. 17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one binds to oocyte-specific plasma membrane receptors and pertussis toxin-sensitive inhibitory G proteins in fish, inhibits Adenylate Cyclase and reduces intracellular cAMP via the membrane receptor-G protein coupling pathway, thereby initiating downstream signal transduction. 17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one induces de novo synthesis of cyclin B, mediates the translation of cyclin B mRNA and the phosphorylation of cdc2, and promotes the production of maturation-promoting factor (MPF). 17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one drives meiotic maturation of fish oocytes. 17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one is applicable for development-related research.

17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one There are two types of high affinity (Kd=18 nM) and low affinity (Kd=0.3 μM) receptors that can bind to the membrane of rainbow trout oocytes in the late stage of yolk formation, and their signaling pathways involve pertussis toxin sensitive inhibitory G protein (Gi ) .
17 α, 20 β - Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one is the most potent steroid in inducing oocyte maturation in amago salmon, and its endogenous levels sharply increase during oocyte maturation and ovulation; It can inhibit the activity of adenylate cyclase in the membrane of rainbow trout oocytes, which is partially mediated by the alpha subunit of inhibitory G protein (Gi ) .
17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (100 nM-1 μM)  Selective reduction of ADP ribosylation of the 40 kDa Gi α subunit in the late stage of rainbow trout yolk formation catalyzed by pertussis toxin indicates its ability to activate inhibitory G protein.
17 α, 20 β - Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one can induce complete maturation of immature goldfish oocytes through a membrane mediated pathway, initiating de novo synthesis of cyclin B by prolonging the cytoplasmic 3'poly (A) of pre-existing cyclin B mRNA.
17 α, 20 β - Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one can induce the activation of maturation promoting factor (MPF) in goldfish oocytes by triggering de novo synthesis of cyclin B; The newly synthesized cyclin B binds to the inactive 35 kDa cdc2 kinase and promotes the phosphorylation of Thr161, thereby generating an active cdc2 kinase.
