2-Mercaptoethanol is a compound that can provide a source of sulfhydryl groups and serves as a substrate for hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase. As a sulfhydryl donor, 2-Mercaptoethanol affects immune function by regulating the intracellular redox state (such as the reduction/oxidation balance of glutathione). In addition, 2-Mercaptoethanol can also influence the binary fission process of Stylonychia notophora by interfering with the balance between -SH and S-S bond.

体外研究

2-Mercptoethanol (0.001-0.5 M; 60 min) can inhibit the initiation of nuclear and cytoplasmic division in Stylonychia nophora bifurcations, but does not affect DNA synthesis.

2-Mercptoethanol (50 µM; 48 h) increased GSH levels in INS-1 rat insulinoma cells, reduced basal insulin secretion at low glucose concentrations, and improved glucose induced insulin secretion responsiveness.
